Sea freight vs. air freight
| Method | Best for | Typical timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Sea freight (container) | Full household moves, furniture, large volumes | 4–12 weeks depending on origin |
| Air freight | Smaller, urgent shipments | Days to a couple of weeks |
| Excess baggage / courier | A handful of boxes, personal items | Days |
Customs and duty basics
Personal belongings being imported as part of a genuine relocation are often eligible for duty and VAT relief under "transfer of residence" rules, provided you meet the qualifying conditions (such as having owned and used the items for a minimum period, and moving your main residence to the UK). You'll typically need to complete a customs form and provide an inventory — your shipping partner can guide you through the exact requirements.
Choosing a shipping partner
- Get quotes from at least two or three international movers experienced on your specific route
- Check whether the quote includes door-to-door service, or just port-to-port (with separate customs clearance and onward delivery costs)
- Ask about insurance cover for loss or damage in transit
- Confirm whether packing materials and labour are included
Planning your timeline
Book your shipment as early as possible once your moving date is confirmed — sea freight in particular needs several weeks' lead time, and popular routes can get booked up during peak relocation seasons (typically summer). Plan for a gap between your belongings leaving and arriving, and pack an essentials bag for that period.
Restricted and prohibited items
Certain items face import restrictions or require extra paperwork, including firearms, some plants and foodstuffs, and certain medications. Declare everything honestly on your customs paperwork — undeclared items can cause significant delays or penalties.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book my shipping?
As soon as your moving date is confirmed — ideally 6–8 weeks ahead for sea freight, especially in peak season.
Will I have to pay import duty on my belongings?
Genuine personal belongings moving with you are often eligible for relief under transfer of residence rules, subject to conditions — your shipping partner can confirm eligibility and paperwork.
What's the difference between door-to-door and port-to-port shipping?
Door-to-door includes collection, shipping, customs clearance and delivery to your new address; port-to-port only covers the shipping leg, leaving you to arrange the rest.
Should I bring my car with me?
Shipping a car internationally is possible but often costly and complex with registration requirements at the other end — many expats find it simpler to use our expat car leasing service and sell or store their vehicle at home instead.
